James L. Young, Jr

Areas of Practice:  Attorney Young’s practice includes representation of clients in the areas of business law (including resolution of partnership disputes), estate planning, wills and trusts, probate, commercial finance, real estate, and creditor/debtor law, including resolution of troubled loan facilities and foreclosure.  He has been a member of the firm since 1991.

Education:  Attorney Young is a native of Shelton, Connecticut, a 1975 Graduate of Southern Connecticut State University and a 1981 graduate of the Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon.

Experience and Law Related Activities:  After admission to the Oregon State Bar in 1981, Attorney Young was for four years employed as in-house counsel at an Oregon bank and worked primarily in commercial transactions and recovery efforts for troubled loan relationships.    He also served for two years as a Personal Trust Officer in the Trust Department of the bank.

Since returning to Connecticut in 1987, Attorney Young has been entrusted by individuals to assist them in achieving estate planning goals, and by individuals and businesses to represent their interests in business dealings, credit arrangements, financing and real estate development, and in achieving desirable resolutions to troubled loans and business disputes.  Attorney Young has years of experience in assisting clients in buying and selling businesses and closing commercial loan transactions, including those involving the Small Business Administration guarantees.     The current economic downturn is the third in which Attorney Young has assisted clients in seeking resolutions to difficult financial circumstances, as he represented clients in the recession of the early 1980’s (in Oregon), and then in Connecticut in the early 1990’s.

Attorney Young also works with our clients to identify estate planning goals and create appropriate documents to establish their plans, including wills, revocable living trusts, life insurance trusts, powers of attorney, living wills, durable powers of attorneys, and other instruments.

Attorney Young has represented financial institutions over the years in a variety of different matters, including simple and complex commercial loan closings and workouts, and in foreclosure / recovery proceedings upon mortgages involving substantial commercial properties, including the Windham Mills Development Corporation property in Willimantic, and the RiverMill Development complex in Thompson, CT, and most recently in the foreclosure of a mortgage upon a 42 unit condominium development in Killingly, CT.     Attorney Young also works with individuals and small businesses in addressing and resolving troubled loan relationships with institutions and business partners.

Attorney Young is a member of National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, and a member of the Probate and Estate Planning, Elder Law, Business Law, Commercial Law and Bankruptcy Sections of the Connecticut Bar Association.

Community Involvement:  Attorney Young resides in Mystic, Connecticut, with his family.  He is a past Vice Chairman of the Zoning Board of appeals of the Town of Groton (1995-2000), past Chairman of the Economic Development Commission of the Town of Groton, past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Southeastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce, Inc., and is a member of the Board of Directors of the United Cerebral Palsy of Eastern Connecticut.

Attorney Young has a lifelong love of the game of golf (though with admittedly unreliable skills), and in the winter, when one can’t golf, downhill skiing (with even more unreliable skills).
